Mr. Greeves,
I attended your webinar “Using Twitter & Facebook in a Crisis: Keys to Reaching Your Citizens” on Thursday, March 17, 2011.
I work for the Village of Schaumburg, IL (population 75,000). We have a social media presence and are looking to expand by utilizing our Twitter account for emergency alerts.
I am reaching out, to inquire if you have information on what other cities are doing regarding handling the task of managing Social Media.
Do you find City’s are creating a Social Media position or is the responsibility shared across the organization through existing personnel?
Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Hi Michelle – good to hear from you! I am glad to hear that Schaumburg is taking the social media plunge! Emergency Management is becoming a very popular use of social media in government. I believe I included several examples and other good reads during the presentation, but if you need some more examples, please let me know. I am only aware of a few local government organizations that have a dedicated person or persons to manage their social media presence. New York City comes to mind as a rare example, but there are probably a few others, likely to be the big cities. Most organizations choose to divvy up the social media tasks amongst several departments, often with Public Information or IT departments taking the lead. Although it is a couple of years old, here is a post I did on social media workgroups that you may also find useful. A co-author and I are putting the final touches on a Social Media Guidebook for Government, hopefully it will be out in the spring. I’ll let you know when it comes out as you might find it useful. I hope this info helps you in your efforts – please do not hesitate to contact me again with any additional questions. Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you Bill – this was great information
